Long Review:

Take a musical trip around the world with this joyful collection of songs sung in different languages. Stars of the international world music scene present 12 songs from Senegal, Bolivia, Greece, France, Israel, Ethiopa, Brazil, Jamaica, Australia, the USA, Congo, and Canada. The selections represent a diverse array of rhythms, instrumentation, and languages – from “Fatou Yo (I Am Fatou)” a Senegalese song sung in Mandingo, to the familiar Australian song “Nyandi Matilda (Waltzing Matilda)” sung in the Aboriginal language of Pitjantjatjara, to the Brazilian “Bonjour Pra Você (Good Morning to You)” sung in Portuguese and Patuá, to “Zichronot M’Africa (Memories of Africa)”, a moving song about the airlift of Ethiopian Jews into Israel sung by a children’s chorus in Hebrew. Also featured are five songs in English – including the zippy zydeco “Mardi Gras Mambo”, a reggae tune from Jamaica sung by Bob Marley’s mother, and the quirky, boppy “Bongo Bong” by French pop star Manu Chao. Informative and colorfully illustrated liner notes explain where each song is from and some of the musical traditions of that culture, and the words in the original language, with English translation. The sheer variety and diversity of world musical traditions celebrated here – not to mention the fun, sing-alongable songs – make this collection bear repeated listening.
