Long Review:

Anna and Caleb live alone with their widowed father on the prairie and are anxious to meet the woman from Maine who has answered his ad for a wife. When Sarah arrives to stay for a month on trial, Anna and Caleb become very attached to her. But they worry she will miss the sea and her home in Maine too much and decide not to stay. Glenn Close, who portrayed Sarah in the superb Hallmark Hall of Fame film adaptation, reads Patricia MacLachlan’s Newbery Medal winning novel with affecting tenderness. Because the daughter Anna narrates the novel, Close reads the story mostly in a voice slightly higher pitched than her normal voice, changing a little for the other characters. And haunting passages of piano music are used to great effect throughout, often for chapter breaks, but also during emotional moments in the story. This unabridged audio adaptation is also available on a CD compilation that includes the other stories in the Sarah, Plain and Tall trilogy, Skylark, and Caleb’s Story.
