Long Review:

Alternating music with narration, Los Lobos and Lalo Guerrero tell the story of a grandpa who takes his sons and grandchildren on a fantastic trip back to Mexico to celebrate his 80th birthday. Sites along the way spark memories, which in turn spark musical interludes – mostly traditional Mexican songs, with a few 50s and 60s style rock ‘n roll songs. Some songs are given new or additional words to go with the story, and some are sung in Spanish, some in English, and some in both languages. The traditional songs include “De Colores”, “Cielito Lindo”, “La Mañanita Alegre”, “La Bamba”, and a corrido, which is a sort of Tex-Mex version of rap. The rock ‘n roll tunes include “Wooly Bully” and“Route 90”, and the psychedelic 60s tune, “La, la, la.” And the last track introduces listeners to all of the instruments heard in Papa’s musical dream. The slightly goofy, but irresistibly sweet story keeps you listening, and the music of Lalo Guerrero (the grandfather of contemporary Chicano music) and Los Lobos (the popular Chicano rock ‘n roll group from East L.A.) will make you want to jump up and baile!
