Loaded with graphics, animations, sound effects, and kid appeal, this can be used as a very simple picture dictionary – or just as a fun way for young children to explore words and language. Aimed at ages 3-7, even children who are not yet reading can use and enjoy this because just about every word on each screen is spoken aloud at the click of the mouse (including every entry word and definition), and there are pictures and animations on every screen that often serve as contextual clues.
Clever and simple design make this easy to navigate, and fun to browse. Some nice features include a “Surprise Me” button that brings up a randomly chosen word and definition from the dictionary, a “Backtrack” feature which shows mini-versions of the last 10 screens viewed (and allow you to jump to any of these screens), and three different word and spelling games. Children can get at words in the dictionary in many different ways, including by simply flipping through the “pages” of the dictionary, and by clicking on highlighted terms or picture icons within a definition, which will lead to other related words and definitions.

It is this connectivity – one word leading to another word and to yet another word, which will encourage children to follow their interests and enrich their vocabulary at the same time. A minor drawback is that the program window is rather small (it appears on the desktop as a rectangle, roughly 5.5” x 4.5”), and it cannot be made larger.
