Short Review:
The Encarta Reference Suite has evolved over the past 9 years into one of the finest reference tools available in digital format. While it lacks World Book’s perfect balancing of accessibility and content for family and school use, Encarta is the leader.
Long Review:
While it lacks the perfect balancing of accessibility and content for family and school use of the World Book, the Encarta Reference Suite has evolved over the past 9 years into one of the finest reference tools available in digital format. By continuing to improve, update, and expand its contents, Microsoft has taken its encyclopedia from mediocre to excellent. The level and scope of the articles make Encarta best suited for general adult use—or for high school or above in a family or school setting. One area in which Encarta continues to lead all of the other digital encyclopedias is in its stylish and seamless interface. No other digital encyclopedia pulls this off with quite the panache of Encarta. The Reference Suite 2003 includes an expanded version of the Encarta Encyclopedia Deluxe 2003, along with the ambitious but flawed Encarta World English Dictionary, the excellent Encarta Interactive World Atlas, and the Third Edition of the superb and historic Encarta Africana.
