Long Review:

Two young boys (Ryann Williams and Tucker Bliss) give voice to Raschka’s simple, witty, and wise story of the beginnings of a friendship. With a funky urban backbeat and the faint street noise of traffic with the occasional siren in the background, two young boys meet – on the playground, on the street, or in the park, it doesn’t matter – and shyly talk to each other. The two boys’ simple dialogue conveys their sadness at being alone with no friends, their shyness at reaching out to one another, and their incredulity and joy at finding a friend. Though it is told through the boys’ dialogue in just 34 single syllable words (like those of the title), Raschka’s deceptively simple story is a real human drama. Young listeners will want to read or look at the book while listening, so as not to miss Raschka’s Caldecott Honor winning illustrations, and the double-sided cassette tape offers the choice of reading along with, or without page-turning sounds. Look for this at your local library or bookstore, or you can order it directly from Weston Woods by calling 1-800-243-5020.
