Long Review:

With their simple tunes, easy-to-learn verses, and heartwarming charm, these classic children's folk songs will soon have the whole family singing and humming along. In fact, this album is a true family affair, as it combines the voice of folk star Woody Guthrie, recorded forty years ago, with updated vocals and arrangements, all lovingly put together and performed by Woody's descendants, including his son Arlo, daughter Nora, and a chorus of grandchildren. The songs focus on everyday activities and experiences familiar to any preschooler, and parents will find themselves beginning the day with "Wake Up," making up new verses for "Cleano" during bath time, and encouraging cooperation with "We all work together with a wiggle and a giggle/We all work together with a giggle and a grin." Some listeners may already know a few of these selections, such as "Put Your Finger in the Air" and "Riding in My Car." Guthrie has a real knack for seeing the world through children's eyes and identifying the people and places that are most important to them. He artfully blends together simple language and nonsense words to create a mood and capture the imagination. Recognizing a kindred spirit, kids will respond to Woody's wonderfully silly lyrics ("I drop my thumb,/Pick it up, pick it up,/And put it back with my fingers") as well as his catchy tunes and repetitive refrains. Just right for the under-five set, this CD is a great one to grow on. You can purchase this CD online through the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives (run by Woody's daughter Nora) at www.woodyguthrie.org - just click on Recordings in the For Kids and Family section of the Record and Book Catalogue.
