Short Review:
Featuring the author as narrator and a talented full cast, this dramatic performance of Philip Pullman’s mystical tale of high fantasy and epic adventure is as compelling to listen to as the best radio serials of yesteryear.
Long Review:

Young Lyra and her daemon – a shape-shifting manifestation of her inner being – go on a perilous journey to the frozen north to search for Lord Asriel, her scientist uncle, and to rescue children who have been kidnapped for a gruesome experiment. This wholly original and mystical tale of high fantasy and epic adventure set in a “universe like ours but different in many ways” is the first in Pullman’s sophisticated, complex, and beautifully written His Dark Materials trilogy, which also includes The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. With Philip Pullman as the narrator reading the bulk of the story seamlessly interwoven with a talented full cast, this dramatic performance is as compelling to listen to as the best radio serials of yesteryear. Pullman’s language is so descriptive, atmospheric, and elegant, that hearing it read aloud by the author in his soft British accent – and hearing each character brought to such vivid life by the actors – is like attending great theater. Though you can probably read the book in less time, listening to all 11 hours of this production is definitely time well spent.
