Long Review:

Blending together toe-tapping tunes and irresistible lyrics, this talented singer/songwriter presents a tantalizing glimpse of many countries and cultures, always underscoring the message that despite their differences, people everywhere are the same. The sixteen selections represent an intriguing variety of musical styles, and the mood ranges from the serious to the silly. In the upbeat title song, Chapin invites listeners along on a fun-filled trip around the globe: "My home, your home, the planet Earth is ours to roam." "What Is a Didjeridoo?" introduces some interesting instruments from different lands, while the wonderfully inane "Wonderful World of Yes" will have children "yesing" and "noing" in several languages. One rousing selection weaves together the familiar tunes of well-known national dances, while another encourages kids to "step up to the world's buffet" and partake of some delicious international fare. There is a folk song from Italy, a lullaby from Russia, and a spirit-lifting ballad called "Heartache to Happy." With its cha-cha beat, "A Forest in the Rain" highlights some colorful flora and fauna, while "Song of the Earth" encourages listeners to "Treat the earth well." Chapin's hearty voice is always appealing, and the imaginative and witty lyrics will appeal to adults as well as to kids. The instruments used range from Chapin's guitar, autoharp, mandolin, and ukulele, to numerous horns, a balalaika, a cittern, and a hammered dulcimer, creating a rich and varied sound that matches the themes found in the lyrics. Filled with glowing humor, catchy beats, clever word play, and international flavor, this CD is a great choice for the whole family.
